Very rare early vintage Selmer "New large bore" from 1930 with 12601 serial number. Almost 90 years old! Crazy to think this sax was produced only 8 years after Selmer acquired the Adolphe Sax factory and started making horns. Can't quite work out the lacquering situation yet but it certainly has a very unusual vintage two tone effect! I actually went in for a Mark VI but left with this gem as it has so much character not only in looks but also in the tone and the way it plays over the whole range. Welcome to the family.
Big shout out to the guys at Headwind Music Ltd in Bristol. Sax players, this is a superb new shop that opened about 7 months ago. The three owners are all pro sax players and really know their stuff. They have a great selection of reeds, mouthpieces, new horns and to my pleasant surprise some awesome vintage beauties. They set me up in a room with a mark vi, balanced action, Conn 10m, Cigar cutter and this large bore. They also had a rare C melody and some great mark vi altos. Can't recommend Headwind highly enough and definitely worth a trip.
